Spiritual Importance of Sankatahara Chaturthi

ॐ Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah
Dedicated to Lord Ganesha is an auspicious day of Sankatahara Chaturthi. This month it falls on Wednesday the July 12. This day is observed in every lunar month of the Hindu calendar on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (dark lunar phase or the waning phase). Fasting is an integral part of this day and Lord Ganesha devotees break this fast only upon having the auspicious sight of the moon preceded by prayers to Ganesha.
On this day devotees rise up early to offer prayers and worship the Lord. Lord Ganesh is known to remove any obstacles or hardships that one may face in their life. By offering prayers and worshipping Ganesha with Dhruva grass is meant to spiritually elevate the devotee.
Food offerings like banana, milk, kozhukattai made from coconut or Sundall are served as prasadams. Some devotees are only on water while others observe a partial fast. Fasting or Sankatahara Chaturthi vratam is basically to purify the mind and body.

Such Chaturthi every month provide an opportunity for us to partially restrain from food so that toxins are eliminated off our bodies. Also fast reduces craving for food and helps to keep the mind calm and steady in the Japa of the Lord. This one point focussed Japam helps increase concentration and curtail all selfish desires and negative qualities such as anger, greed, lust, jealousy and so on. Thus by being fixed in the thought of Lord and remaining in the Satsanga of good people, positive thoughts usher in.
Flowers offered to the Lord reminds us of the peace and purity within us and helps us conquer all the negative qualities. Hence prayers and offerings of flowers are considered auspicious during such vratas.
Considered as the lord of wisdom and prosperity Lord Ganesha is invoked before the beginning of any auspicious work. He is believed to fulfill one's desires. Ganapathi is the Lord of the intellect and higher knowledge
According to Ganesha Purana, one is bestowed upon material comforts upon observing Sankatahara Ganapathi Vrata. Cure from disease, being blessed with a child, success in interviews and examinations, and other material comforts are achieved.
Most important of all we must remember that irrespective of material comforts spiritual elevation is what one should always seek for through such vratas and worships.

Below is a Prayer to be chanted on this day:
